Diplomi-insinriDiplomi-insinri, in Swedish diplomingenjr, is a Finnish 6-year engineering degree comparable to a Master of Science in Engineering, taught at e.g. Helsinki University of Technology. The program is atomic - no "Bachelor in Engineering" degree exists. It is worth of 180 credits, where one credit represents 40 hours of work. The degree consists of: - Basic studies, about 70 cr., mathematics, physics, basic courses in a variety of majors in a variety of laboratories
- Specialization, 30 cr., studies set by the laboratory as useful in the majors and minors available at the laboratory
- Major, 20 cr., and a minor, 20 cr.
- Diploma project, 20 cr., an engineering project usually taking about -1 year.
- Plus, electives so that 180 credits are obtained
The degree is fundamentally incompatible with the vocational engineering degree, a three-year degree from a polytechnic. Sometimes these are given only English titles such as "Bachelor of Engineering", but this is not an university degree. This is because many basic courses can be highly theoretical compared to the practice-oriented polytechnic courses. About 1/3 of the total 180 credits can be compensated for a vocational college graduate, specifically not including many theoretical basic courses in e.g. mathematics.
