Die Schne Galathee

In early 1860s the French operetta from Jacques Offenbach arrived in Vienna. Franz von Supp was obliged to compete by taking the time-honored tradition of Vienna and combining it with the Offenbach style. Supp's first critical success was with the operetta "Die schne Galathe" (The beatiful Galatea). The avant-premiere vas performed in Berlin and then the operetta vas premiered in the Carl-Theather in Vienna on September 9, 1865. The libretto was by Supp and Poly Henrion. Plot The sculptor Pygmalion has falen madly in love with his statue of Galathe. Therefore want not to sell the statue to the patron of the art, Mydas, and ask Venus, the godness of the love, to brethe life into the statue. Venus grants him the request and Galathe comes to life. However, Galate turn out to be a very independent mined creature. She is faithless to the Pygmalion with his servant Ganymed (because is much more pleasing to her then Pygmalion) and neither reject Mydas, who offer her a jewerly. When Pygmalion catch Galathe in compromising situation, implores Venus to turn her back into stone. The jewerly honored by Midas is either turned to stone, but the whole statue is sold to him.
