Diane Deans

Diane Deans is an Ottawa City Councillor. She represents Ward 10 Gloucester-Southgate, in the southeast of the city. A graduate of the University of Guelph she was active in the Canadian Federation of Students and is considered on of city hall's more leftwing politicians. She was first elected to Ottawa city council in 1994. With the creation of the new city in 2000 she faced a tough election against fellow city councillor and the chair of the Ottawa Board of Trade. In the 2003 Ottawa election she handily defeated two less well known opponents. On city council her main concern has been the creation of a new branch for the Ottawa Public Library in her rapidly growing ward. She has also been a major proponent of rules limiting smoking in the city. In 2004 she ran for the Liberal nomination in the riding of Ottawa South. She lost to David McGuinty and her supporters alleged that the process was biased against her by the party leadership. She is today considered likely to challenge Bob Chiarelli for the mayoralty in 2006. Her husband Ian Deans served as an NDP Member of Parliament for several years and was later a prominent civil servant.
