Dewitt County, Illinois

DeWitt County is a county located in the state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 16,798. Its name is in honor of the seventh Governor of New York State, DeWitt Clinton. Its county seat is Clinton, Illinois6. The U.S. Census Bureau and the USGS list the county's name as De Witt, although the county uses the name DeWitt (no space).

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,049 km² (405 mi²). 1,030 km² (398 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.87% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 16,798 people, 6,770 households, and 4,684 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (42/mi²). There are 7,282 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.81% White, 0.49% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 1.27% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,770 households out of which 30.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.80% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.80% are non-families. 26.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.95. In the county the population is spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 28.30% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 15.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.50 males. The median income for a household in the county is $41,256, and the median income for a family is $50,429. Males have a median income of $35,902 versus $23,998 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,488. 8.20% of the population and 5.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.90% of those under the age of 18 and 7.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
