Devil Ray Heavy FighterThe Devil Ray heavy fighter was a fictional spaceplane in the Wing Commander computer game. It was fielded by the Nephilim as their premier heavy fighter; despite upgrades to the Confederation's Vampire heavy fighter since the Devil Ray's first appearance, it remains the fastest and most maneuverable fighter known to mankind. The Devil Ray was based on the Manta heavy fighter chassis. It shared the other craft's diamond-shaped body and slightly canted-ventral fins, but its colorings were different, and where the Manta had a single horizontal engine pod, the Devil Ray had two vertical ones. It had very strong shields and armor, an incredible top speed (rated as 600 KPS by some computer simulations). Each carried three heavy gorgon cannon, two light plasma cannon, eight image-recognition missiles and two rockets that carried three IFF missiles each. Its pool of ECM decoys was small, but each was just as effective, perhaps more so, as the equivalent Confed munition. It also carried a tractor beam, and on a number of occasions was seen to abduct ejected Confed pilots. Finally, Devil Rays tended to be flown exclusively by Warlords, and with such cunning pilots at the helm they could wreak havoc on lesser enemy pilots. For some reason, however, if a certain Lt. Lance Casey was around (and the Warlord was not involved in abducting Confed personnel), any given Devil Ray would make a beeline for him, almost as if programmed to do so; and more often than not, this foe was the last the Warlord engaged. During the Proxima campaign, Devil Rays were seen to be deployed as standard fighters flown by non-Warlord pilots. This did not appreciably decrease their lethality, especially since they no longer operated solo.
