Dennis DominatorLaunched in 1977 the Dennis Dominator was Dennis's first rear engined double decker chassis after being absent since the last Lolines were produced in 1967. It was described as being bespoke, with there being a lot of options. It was an a replacement for the Daimler/Leyland Fleetline to some extent, sometimes known as an updated Fleetline. It was intended to be mainly sold with the trusty Gardner 6LXB engine coupled up to a Voith transmission and a drop-centre rear axle. Though South Yorkshire PTE operated around 450 with Rolls-Royce Eagle engines and straight axles, most had high-height Alexander RH-Type bodywork and deliveries started from them in 1981-6, though some had East Lancs and Northern Counties bodywork. The Dominator also appealed to Municiples such as Leicester who operatoed a large fleet with East Lancs bodies from 1977(though and odd few were Marshall bodies). It also sold in reasnable numbers to the Central Scottish from 1981 with Alexanders low-height RL type bodywork. There were others too and in 1978-80 was sold as a single-decker before the launch of the Dennis Falcon. Other engines in the Dominator was the Cummins L10, the turbocharged Gardner 6LXCT and DAF engines. Production of the Dominator was odd after de-regulation in 1986 with production going on and off from the 1992-6 peroid (when production was finishing) i.e. 8 were built in 1992, 3 built in 1993 non in 1994 and 1995 and 4 built in 1996. All in all around 1000 were sold. The Dominator was replaced in 1996 by the short-lived longditudinal engined Arrow. The Dominator was also sold for a time in the late '70's/early '80's to Hong Kong, until 1982 when a tri-axle version was developed for the market, known as the Dragon which was sold to Kowloon Motor Bus, the same model was sold to China Motor Bus, but was knon as the Condor. --Matthew Forth 2005
