Democratic Empire

A democratic empire refers to a political state which conducts its internal affairs democratically (i.e. with respect for its citizens and their collective will) but externally its policies have a striking resemblance to imperial rule. The term represents a paradox—while domestic struggles work towards the elevation of civil rights and protections of personhood, the foreign policy often remains remarkably indifferent to these concepts—claiming they are untenable or otherwise not relevant or desirable.
