Delfshaven

Delfshaven is a former town on the Meuse, and now a neighbourhood of Rotterdam. The town of Delfshaven grew around the harbour of the city of Delft. Delft itself was not located on a major river, so a harbour was created about 10km south of the city on the river Meuse, to be able to receive tall sea-faring ships. Since 1398 this settlement was known as Delfshaven. Fishing, shipbuilding, and the distillery of 'jenever' (gin), were the main sources of income. Delfshaven belonged to Delft until 1811. During the French occupation, Delfshaven was independent for a brief time. The city was joined to Rotterdam in 1886. Over the years, Delfshaven experienced many hardships that included fires, floods, poverty, and Spanish occupation.
