Dayton, WashingtonDayton is a city located in Columbia County, Washington. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,655. It is the county seat of Columbia County. History Dayton was officially incorporated on November 10, 1881. Geography is located at 46°19'11" North, 117°58'40" West (46.319608, -117.977699). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²). 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,655 people, 1,081 households, and 695 families residing in the city. The population density is 697.3/km² (1,803.0/mi²). There are 1,181 housing units at an average density of 310.2/km² (802.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.58% White, 0.30% African American, 1.05% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.54% from other races, and 2.00% from two or more races. 8.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,081 households out of which 30.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 3.02. In the city the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.1 males. The median income for a household in the city is $31,409, and the median income for a family is $40,714. Males have a median income of $31,395 versus $21,339 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,925. 13.3% of the population and 10.3% of families are below the poverty line.
