david waddington, baron waddington

David Charles Waddington, Baron Waddington, PC (born August 2, 1929), is a Conservative politician in the United Kingdom. Educated at Hertford College, Oxford, where he was chairman of the university's Conservative Association, he was called to the Bar in 1951. He was first elected to Parliament in 1968, for Nelson and Colne. He left in 1974 and was returned again in 1979 for Clitheroe, the constituency being renamed Ribble Valley in 1983. He served as a junior minister under Margaret Thatcher, and eventually rose to Cabinet level becoming Secretary of State for the Home Department in 1989. In 1990 he was given a life peerage, becoming Baron Waddington. He served as Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the House of Lords until 1992. He later served as Governor of Bermuda.
