David A. Hargrave Background history David A. Hargrave was a game designer of Fantasy and Science Fiction Role Playing Games. His most notable works were based upon his own mythical world of Arduin. From the mid-1970s through 1988 David A. Hargrave authored 10 Role-Playing Game books and supplements based upon this game world. Published under the auspices of Grimoire Games (California) Hargrave also produced 4 Arduin Dungeons and several fantasy item and monster card collections. Hargrave's work broke ground 30 years ago that is touted as cutting edge today; it's perhaps the first "cross-genre" RPG as everything from interstellar war to cybernetic enhancements, super-hero powers, horror and fantasy are found in his games and game systems. Modular in design and concept, the rules sets can be used as "stand alone" games or easily integrated into other, completely different game systems. Arduin was one of the earliest challengers to TSR's DnD and, through various publishers and incarnations, remains as viable today as at its inception. Hargrave also contributed to various magazines and APA's such as Different Worlds, Alarums and Excursions, and Abyss magazine. As a game designer of some note he authored various Call of Cthulhu adventures for Chaosium Inc and was an integral part of the design team for the Sci-Fi game Star Rovers, among others.
