Darkman (Movie)

Darkman is the horrifically scarred alter-ego of Doctor Peyton Westlake, portrayed originally by Liam Neeson and later Arnold Voosloo in Sam Raimi's comic-book trilogy. Westlake was a scientist researching a unique liquid skin formula which would be used to cover burns and injuries. Unfortunately, Westlake could only maintain the liquid skin in daylight for a mere 99 minutes before the cells would become unstable and the liquid skin would dissolve. Just as he unlocked this discovery, a group of criminal thugs trashed his laboratory in the search for a memo which directly linked their involment with Robert Strack and Strack Industries. The retrieval of this memo was urgent to ensure that Strack could expand his corporation. Robert G Durant, the head of the criminal underworld, personally saw to it that Westlake was beaten, burned and blown up along with his life's work. However, Westlake survived, having been thrown from the inferno into a near-by lake. He was recovered and taken to a hospital where surgeons severed nerves in his spine that controlled the sense of pain. Free from the horrific agony of the scars which covered over 40% of his body, Westlake was also, as a result, consumed by a violent rage and possessed the augmented strength of ten men. Freeing himself from the hospital, Westlake retreated to the shadows and allies of the city, eventually back to his lab where he managed to continue his liquid skin work in an effort to cover his burns and return to a normal life. However, his failure to solve the 99 minute barrier frustrated him and eventually led him to seek revenge on those who had forced him to live life in the shadows, as Darkman. Darkman eventually re-located to a laboratory built beneath the city, he built his own underground rail road and security system and continued his work to perfect the liquid skin whilst using his superhuman powers to help those who had no savior. Though his motives are pure, Darkman is seemingly cursed by fate to remain the way his is for the rest of his life. The first Darkman movie was released in 1990 and the second a few years later. The third, Die Darkman Die, was released a few years after that. The first movie was filmed in Los Angeles, and the sequels in Toronto, but the cities are never identified.
