Dale Pierre Selby

Dale Pierre Selby was the ringleader of a vicious murder and robbery in Ogden, Utah on April 22, 1974. Assisted by a fellow airforce airman, William Andrews, the two robbed the Hi-Fi shop just before closing time. Two employees, Stanley Walker 20, and Michelle Ansley 19, were in the store at the time and held hostage. Later 16 year-old Courtney Naisbitt entered the store and was also held hostage in the store's basement. Later that evening, Orren Walker, Stanley's father, became worried that his son had not returned home. He arrived at the store and was also held hostage at gunpoint by two black men. Mr. Walker was also assaulted like the others and thrown down into the basement. Once there, Selby ordered Orren to administer a thick blue liquid to the other hostages. He refused, and was assaulted again and tied. Meanwhile, Courtney's mother Carol arrived at the shop to check on Courtney, who was late getting home. She was also taken to the basement by gunpoint. Once there, the men forced Carol to drink the liquid, which Selby claimed was only a sedative. Carol refused, and was forced to drink the liquid, which was actually liquid drain cleaner. The others were all forced to do the same, and the killers forced the victims to repeat this ordeal multiple times. At that point Andrews argued with Selby about the fate of the victims. Selby ordered him upstairs, and then Selby shot Carol in the head. Stanley and Courtney were next. Orren was shot twice, but tricked his captors into believing he had consumed the toxin, which he spit out in the dark when they weren't looking. Michelle was then raped by Selby and shot as well. To ensure no one survived, Selby kicked a pen into Mr. Walker's ear and strangled him. Miraculously, Orren Walker survived, and the two robbers escaped into the night. When paramedics arrived, Stanley and Michelle were dead. Carol died on the way to the hospital and Courtney was barely breathing, but survived. He suffered much in his recovery, and became an inspiration in the victims rights movement. Orren Walker became the chief witness for the prosecution. Selby and Andrews were apprehended after the crime and damning evidence in their barrack rooms linked them to the crime. A rental agreement for a storage shed was found under the carpet in Selby's room, and there the police recovered the stolen stereo equipment and found a half-full bottle of drain cleaner. Selby and Andrews were both condemned to die for their crimes. Selby died by lethal injection August 28, 1987. Andrews also died by lethal injection in 1992. Their time on death row caused much contention and debate.
