, when he resigned to devote more time as a member of the
National Assembly for Wales

, he announced he would step down from the Assembly at the

elections, despite having leader

asking him not to. Soon after the elections in

, he announced his candidacy for leadership of the party, but lost to
Dafydd Iwan
