Cruger is a town located in Holmes County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 449.

Geography

Cruger is located at 33°19'15" North, 90°14'6" West (33.320770, -90.234919). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 449 people, 161 households, and 112 families residing in the town. The population density is 178.7/km² (462.5/mi²). There are 177 housing units at an average density of 70.5/km² (182.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 25.61% White, 74.16% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 2.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 161 households out of which 33.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.3% are married couples living together, 30.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% are non-families. 29.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.46. In the town the population is spread out with 32.1% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 15.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.3 males. The median income for a household in the town is $15,417, and the median income for a family is $27,500. Males have a median income of $24,375 versus $22,813 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,125. 44.7% of the population and 32.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 50.7% of those under the age of 18 and 58.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
