Cross Plains is a city located in Robertson County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,381.

Geography

Cross Plains is located at 36°32'42" North, 86°40'27" West (36.544912, -86.674260). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.4 km² (8.3 mi²). 21.4 km² (8.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,381 people, 504 households, and 400 families residing in the city. The population density is 64.4/km² (166.8/mi²). There are 536 housing units at an average density of 25.0/km² (64.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.06% White, 3.19% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 2.03% from two or more races. 1.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 504 households out of which 36.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.1% are married couples living together, 11.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.6% are non-families. 16.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.06. In the city the population is spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 106.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.4 males. The median income for a household in the city is $42,279, and the median income for a family is $47,143. Males have a median income of $37,424 versus $24,792 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,792. 12.0% of the population and 8.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.9% of those under the age of 18 and 20.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
