CourseworkIn England, Wales and Northern Ireland, schools place emphasis on two sets of important exams: the GCSEs (usually taken at the age of 16) and the A-levels (at the age of 18). Both of these involve written exams in a number of different subjects, but there is normally an element of project work for each subject as well, which contributes to the final grade. This is referred to as coursework. The amount of coursework has increased significantly over the last few years, and is now expected in virtually all subjects. Often, it overwhelms pupils as the prospect of having both coursework and exams is daunting. However, it is highly useful, and lightens the pressure of exams. There have also been plans to introduce a version of the International Baccalaureate, with a focus on longer, more detailed research, but this plan has since been scrapped. In Universities coursework is often one of many different modes of assessment. Students are required to produce coursework in order to broaden knowledge and enhance research skills, gained and applied from theory into practice. Coursework ranges from simple essays and dissertations to developing portfolios and designing new products. External links * Revision site that offers revision on Physics, Maths, & English.
