Cotui

Cotu is one of the oldest cities of Hispaniola (Republic). It is the capital of Snchez Ramirez Province in el Cibao. It was built by Bartolomew Columbus, Brother of Christopher Columbus, in the year 1510. Cotu was the name of an aborigines Caribbean tribe leader(Cacique) who governed the area. The city is well known for its gold, silver, iron, boxite, marble, nickel, and other precious metals, mines, the rich soils, the largest artificial lake in the Caribbean (Presa de Hatillo). It is also known for its fertile soils, its crystal clear rivers, its caverns (prehistoric caves called Gucaras). It produces rice, plantains, cacao, pineapples, passion fruits, yams, etc. Other major towns near Cotu, in Snchez Ramrez, are La Mata, Fantino, La Cueva and Cevicos.
