Coryell County, TexasCoryell County is located in the state of Texas. Population for the county, as of 2000, was 74,978. The county seat is Gatesville, Texas. Coryell is named for James Coryell, a frontiersman who was killed by Native Americans. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,737 km² (1,057 mi²). 2,724 km² (1,052 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The population density is 28/km² (71/mi²). There are 21,776 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (21/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 65.28% White, 21.80% Black or African American, 0.88% Native American, 1.75% Asian, 0.49% Pacific Islander, 6.26% from other races, and 3.54% from two or more races. 12.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 19,950 households out of which 47.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.80% are married couples living together, 11.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.90% are non-families. 16.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.91 and the average family size is 3.27. In the county, the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 17.90% from 18 to 24, 36.30% from 25 to 44, 13.80% from 45 to 64, and 5.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 105.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $35,999, and the median income for a family is $38,307. Males have a median income of $24,236 versus $21,186 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,410. 9.50% of the population and 7.80% of families are below the poverty line.
