Corona Australis
The
Corona Australis
(
Latin
for
Southern
Crown
) was one of
Ptolemy
's 48
constellations
, and also counts among the 88 modern constellations. The name contrasts with
Corona Borealis
.
History
The constellation was sometimes considered to be the crown of
Sagittarius
, which had fallen on the ground for some reason.
Naming mixup
In
1932
the
International Astronomical Union
officially changed the name of this constellation to
Corona Austrina
(with genitive "Coronae Austrinae"). This may have been due to an inadvertent naming mixup which has never been corrected
http://www.ianridpath.com/constellations1.htm
, but in any case the official
IAU
website continues to list "Corona Austrina" as the official name
http://www.iau.org/IAU/Activities/nomenclature/const.html
. In practice, the original name "Corona Australis" continues to be more widely used.
