Coquille (Tribe)Coquille (tribe) is a Native American tribe in southwest Oregon in the United States. The tribe lives at the mouth of the Coos River where it flows into Coos Bay. The Coquille were forcibly moved onto Siletz Reservation lands in 1856. In 1954, the U.S. federal government terminated its recognition of the tribe. Only as recently as 1989 has the tribe regained its federal recognition. The Coquille groups included the Upper Coquille (Mishikwutinetunne), Upper Umpqua, Kwatami, Shasta Costa, Chetco, Tolowa, Dakubetede (Applegate), and Tututni. Tututni subtribes include the Yukichetunne, Tututni, Mikonotunne, Chemetunne, Chetleshin, Kwaishtunnetunne, and Taltushtuntede (Galice). The Coquille language is an extinct Athabaskan language classified as part of the Tolowa-Galice branch of the Oregon Coast indigenous languages. The lifestyle of the Coquille, like many Northwest Coast tribes, involved fishing and collecting of shellfish. The Coquille nation has a cranberry growing operation in North Bend, Oregon.
