Copyright Protection

The phrase copyright protection is misleading and ambiguous and should be avoided. It's often used to refer to:
  • The monopoly granted to authors by copyright (e.g. "The 1996 act provided additional copyright protection."). Protection is being used politically here, violating Wikipedia's neutral point of view.
  • Copy prevention mechanisms that prevent things being copied (e.g. "The game came with copyright protection."). These mechanisms prevent all forms of copying, not just those that violate copyright, so calling them copyright protection is incorrect.
