A constrictor knot is a harsh binding knot which is very difficult to undo. It is made similarly to a clove hitch, but with one end passed under the main loop. Its relation to the clove hitch is similar to the anchor bend's relation to the round-turn-and-two-half-hitches. It might be used for tying the neck of a bag (provided you don't want to re-open it in a hurry, or without cutting the binding). Tied tightly with small-stuff, it is used temporarily to bind the fibres of a rope or strand end together while splicing or when cutting to length and before whipping an end. An alternative is to use a turn of plastic, adhesive tape for the same purpose.

Comments

It's also possible to finish the knot off with an additional overhand knot to give it some of the properties of a square knot.
