ConradinesThe Conradines were a short-lived dynasty of Franconian dukes, named after Konrad the Elder and his son Conrad I (or Konrad), Duke of Franconia, King of Germany. Father and son decisively defeated the rival counts of Babenberg in the battle of Fritzlar in 906 to attain supremacy as dukes of Franconia. Conrad the Elder died in the battle, but his son went on to be elected king of the East Franconian Empire in 911. On his deathbed in December 918, he persuaded his brother Eberhard, markgrave and subsequently duke of Franconia, to forgo the crown for himself and to elect as his successor Henry the Fowler (Henry I), duke of Saxony, at the Reichstag of Fritzlar in 919 in order to ensure unity among the German tribes and preserve the empire.
