Conceptual Data Model
Conceptual data models, sometimes called domain models, are an abstract representation typically used to explore domain entity types and the relationships between them. For example, a
conceptual/domain model
for a karate studio would include domain entity types such as
Student
,
Belt
,
Grading
, and
Tournament
.
Methodology Issues
1. Conceptual data models are often created as the precursor to logical data models or as alternatives to them. 2. Keep your conceptual models as simple as possible. 3. You can apply a
wide variety of notations
when data modeling. 4. It is possible to use the
UML to data model
. In fact "conceptual model" or "domain model" are more appropriate names than "conceptual data model" because they don't bias you towards just using a data-oriented notation. 5. You can and should consider
sketching domain models on whiteboards
. 6. Stakeholders should be
active participants in modeling
. This is possible if you chose to adopt
inclusive modeling techniques
.
