Concelho

A concelho is the primary local administrative unit in Portugal (and other Lusophone countries). It is also called município (municipality). It can also be loosely translated as county. A concelho contains one or more freguesias. The elected bodies of a concelho are the Cmara Municipal and the Assembleia Municipal. According to figures from the Instituto Nacional de Estatística, there are 308 concelhos in Portugal. A concelho is does not necessarily correspond to a city (Portuguese: cidade) or town (Portuguese: vila). See also: List of Concelhos of Portugal
In Macao, concelho translates as city as they correspond to cidades/vilas. There are two concelhos in Macao. The municipal councils in Macao were abolished after the handover. See also: List of Concelhos of Macao
