ConaryConary: A name of Celtic/Gaelic origin, meaning "Wise Man" An Open Source software packaging system under development, which applies new ideas from distributed configuration management tools such as GNU arch and Monotone. Rather than concentrating on "package" files as RPM and dpkg do, Conary goes beyond that capability with important architectural distinctions.
Conary uses a version tree to define what is "newer" and "older" rather then comparing the version numbers used in the original sources; version numbers merely describe provenance. Internet-based, replicated software repositories are the canonical data sources, while retaining full support for disconnected operations. Conary's design emphasizes files over packages, unlike the dominant "packaging" metaphor. File renames are tracked allowing seamless renaming, new package versions refer to unchanged files from old versions rather then thinking those files have changed, and intelligent merging allows file permissions and ownerships to persist through package updates.
