Colloquy

For the Mac OS X IRC client see Colloquy (IRC client)
In law, a colloquy is a routine, highly formalized conversation between a defendant and a judge. The term is typically applied to the conversation that takes place when a defendant enters into a plea bargain and the judge is supposed to verify that the defendant understands that they are waiving their right to a jury trial. They have been heavily criticized as a parody of justice, similar in their empty formalism to the collusive divorces that were common before the advent of no-fault divorce.
