Code BlueCode Blue is a technical, jargon term for medical emergencies. An alternate term is Code 99. Most healthcare facilities utilize a system of codes to represent the presence of an emergency or diaster. These codes are most commonly signified by a color or number. Code blue is almost universally used to represent a real or suspected eminent loss of life - the patient has stopped breathing and his/her heart has stopped beating. CPR should be initiated immediately. The Advanced Cardiac Life Support protocol described by the American Red Cross should be initiated as soon as a staff member, trained in its use, is on the scene. Since ACLS should under no circumstances be attempted by untrained persons, details of this protocol will not be provided. However, it involves establishing an open airway, possibly with an endotracheal tube to provide airflow directly to the bronchi if necessary, as well as assessment of the need of cardiac procedures, injection of appropriate medications intravenously, and direct-current asynchronous cardioversion ("shock") to the heart when indicated.
