Coastal Carolina University

Coastal Carolina University is an independant public university in Conway, South Carolina, which is near the fast growing resort and retirement area of Myrtle Beach. The college was founded in 1954 as a night school meeting in Conway High School known as Coastal Carolina Junior College and affiliated with the College of Charleston. In 1958 the school was placed under the control of Horry County, South Carolina after the CofC ended its extension programs. It was then supported by a county tax. In 1961 the school was placed under state control and renamed the Coastal Carolina Campus of the University of South Carolina and construction began on a campus on land donated by local timber companies. The school became a four-year institution in 1974 and was renamed Coastal Carolina College of the University of South Carolina. In 1993 the college became an independent state supported institution and was renamed Coastal Carolina University. Today the school enrolls about 8,000 students and offers undergraduate degrees in 38 major fields and 36 minors. CCU also offers six master's degree programs. In athletic competition, the mascot is the Chanticleer. A Chanticleer is the fiesty rooster named in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and is a derivative of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. CCU competes in the Big South Conference. In their second season of NCAA Division I-AA football competition, the Chanticleers won the Big South Conference championship.
