Cleveland County, North Carolina Cleveland County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 96,287. Its county seat is Shelby6. History The county was formed as Cleaveland County in 1841 from parts of Lincoln County and Rutherford County. It was named for Benjamin Cleaveland, a colonel in the American Revolutionary War, who took part in the Battle of King's Mountain. The present spelling was adopted in 1887. Law and government Cleveland County is a member of the Isothermal Planning and Development Commission regional council of governments. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,214 km² (469 mi²). 1,203 km² (465 mi²) of it is land and 10 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.85% water. Townships The county is divided into eleven townships, which are both numbered and named: 1 (River), 2 (Boiling Springs), 3 (Rippy), 4 (Kings Mountain), 5 (Warlick), 6 (Shelby), 7 (Sandy Run), 8 (Polkville), 9 (Double Shoals), 10 (Knob Creek), and 11 (Casar). Adjacent Counties Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 96,287 people, 37,046 households, and 27,006 families residing in the county. The population density is 80/km² (207/mi²). There are 40,317 housing units at an average density of 34/km² (87/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 76.81% White, 20.93% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 1.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 37,046 households out of which 32.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.00% are married couples living together, 13.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.10% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.98. In the county the population is spread out with 25.20% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 13.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.60 males. The median income for a household in the county is $35,283, and the median income for a family is $41,733. Males have a median income of $30,882 versus $21,995 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,395. 13.30% of the population and 10.10% of families are below the poverty line.
