Clayton is a borough located in Gloucester County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 7,139.

Geography

Clayton is located at 39°39'28" North, 75°5'17" West (39.657914, -75.087983). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 19.0 km² (7.3 mi²). 18.6 km² (7.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.31% water. Clayton borders Glassboro, Elk Township, Franklin Township, and Monroe Township.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 7,139 people, 2,464 households, and 1,884 families residing in the borough. The population density is 383.9/km² (994.2/mi²). There are 2,680 housing units at an average density of 144.1/km² (373.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 79.23% White, 16.05% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 2.66% from two or more races. 3.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,464 households out of which 39.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% are married couples living together, 13.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.5% are non-families. 19.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.89 and the average family size is 3.31. In the borough the population is spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.8 males. The median income for a household in the borough is $53,219, and the median income for a family is $63,097. Males have a median income of $37,231 versus $29,063 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $20,006. 2.9% of the population and 3.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.0% of those under the age of 18 and 1.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
