Clay County, Indiana Clay County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 26,556. Its name is in honor of Henry Clay, famous American statesman, member of the United States Senate from Kentucky and United States Secretary of State in the 19th century. The county's county seat is Brazil, Indiana6. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 933 km² (360 mi²). 926 km² (358 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.77% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 26,556 people, 10,216 households, and 7,437 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km² (74/mi²). There are 11,097 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (31/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.38% White, 0.33% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 10,216 households out of which 33.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.70% are married couples living together, 9.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.20% are non-families. 23.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.03. In the county the population is spread out with 26.10% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 15.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 94.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.10 males. The median income for a household in the county is $36,865, and the median income for a family is $41,863. Males have a median income of $31,611 versus $21,593 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,364. 8.70% of the population and 6.40% of families are below the poverty line.
