Clay County, Florida

Clay County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 140,814. Its county seat is Green Cove Springs, Florida6.

History

Clay County was created in 1858. Its name is in honor of Henry Clay, famous American statesman, member of the United States Senate from Kentucky and United States Secretary of State in the 19th century.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,667 km² (644 mi²). 1,557 km² (601 mi²) of it is land and 110 km² (43 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.62% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 140,814 people, 50,243 households, and 39,390 families residing in the county. The population density is 90/km² (234/mi²). There are 53,748 housing units at an average density of 35/km² (89/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.44% White, 6.70% Black or African American, 0.47% Native American, 1.99% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.31% from other races, and 2.01% from two or more races. 4.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 50,243 households out of which 39.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.80% are married couples living together, 10.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.60% are non-families. 16.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.77 and the average family size is 3.11. In the county the population is spread out with 28.00% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 30.30% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 9.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $48,854, and the median income for a family is $53,814. Males have a median income of $36,683 versus $25,488 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,868. 6.80% of the population and 5.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.90% of those under the age of 18 and 7.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. According to the Florida Times-Union, in October 2004, there were 106,114 registered voters in Clay County.
