CKCO-TV is a television station based in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. It is an affiliate of the CTV network. It began broadcasting on March 1, 1954 from a transmitter on Baden Hill, near the community of Baden, just west of Kitchener. Originally, CKCO was a private affiliate of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. It changed its affiliation to CTV in 1964. It still broadcasts, on channel 13, from the Baden tower. In addition to the Baden tower, CKCO broadcasts to Sarnia on channel 42 from the CKCO-TV-3 transmitter, which has operated since 1975. CKCO in Kitchener produces a separate, pre-taped newscast for Sarnia. CKCO also broadcasts to the Georgian Bay region on channel 2 from the CKCO-TV-2 transmitter, which has operated since 1971. Prior to 1999, CKCO also broadcasted on channel 11 to the Muskoka and Parry Sound districts of Ontario from the CKCO-TV-4 transmitter near Huntsville. That year, that transmitter was changed to a rebroadcaster of CKNY-TV (MCTV) in North Bay. CKCO was owned by Electrohome from the beginning, and was purchased by Baton Broadcasting in 1996. The viewing area is for Western Ontario with some exceptions. Presently the flagship newscast is called "CKCO News". Prior to 1998, when Baton Broadcasting rebranded all the CTV stations identically, CKCO's newscast was called "CKCO Action News". In the past, newscasts titles on CKCO included "Scan News" and "Ontario Report". CKCO continues to produce a limited amount of local programming, in addition to CKCO News. On Saturday evenings at 6:30 pm, they broadcast a program called "Final Round", which features a four-member panel debating current issues, and is hosted by longtime CKCO on-air personality Brent Hanson. Interestingly, Final Round's branding is the same as the old CKCO Action News. CKCO also broadcasts a current affairs program called "ProvinceWide" (hosted by Diaene Vernile) on Sundays at 6:30 pm. Before CKCO was a CTV owned-and-operated station, they produced a much greater amount of non-news programming. They produced the long-running children's program "Romper Room", which was broadcast across the CTV Television Network from the mid-1960s to 1992. Other programs produced by and seen on CKCO included: "Camp Cariboo" (1988-1990), "Bowling for Dollars" (?-1992), and "Sunday AM". CKCO was well-known for many years for the red jackets worn by news anchors on their newscasts, a practice that emerged around the time they converted to colour television, until 1989. News veterans who had their start at CKCO include Jeff Hutcheson, Lisa LaFlamme and Ron Johnston.
