City Racing

City Racing was a not-for-profit gallery run in a former betting shop premises in Camberwell South London between 1988 and 1998. The space was run as a cooperative by four artists Matt Hale, Colin Lowe, Paul Noble and Peter Owen. As many of the artists who became known as the yBAs were recent graduates of Goldsmiths' College and lived in the area City Racing became an important exhibition space and its opening a social networking opportunity. It also provided employment for the artists running it while they established their own career. Artist who had early exhibitions with City Racing include Sarah Lucas, Mark Wallinger, Fiona Banner and Douglas Gordon. In 1993 the space recieved partial funding from the Arts Council but when this was later withdrawn the artists running the space decided to wind down City Racing though a retrospective book was produced.
