citizens party (hong kong)

Citizens Party (民權黨) is a small pro-democracy political party in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. It was founded by Christine Loh Kung-wai in May 1997. Since May 2000, the party has been headed by Alex Chan Kai-chung. Besides demanding democratic reforms, the party focused on anti-discrimination and minority issues and was particularly concerned with environmental protection. It called for equal opportunities legislation on race and establishment of red-light districts, and opposed reclamation plans of the government. In the 1998 election of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong, Christine Loh Kung-wai won a seat for the party. She decided not to run for the 2000 LegCo election, leaving the party unrepresented in the current LegCo. While continuing to express views in various issues, the party has became less active in the political arena. An attempt of its chairman, Alex Chan Kai-chung, to run for a seat in the 2003 District Council elections failed. See also:
