A chrysalis is a type of pupa, a protective case within which an insect is undergoing metamorphosis from a larva into the adult form. This term typically designates the pupae of butterfly species, and sometimes also moth species. Sometimes the chrysalis is itself contained in a protective silk case called a cocoon. Synonym: Aurelia
