Christy Ring

Christy Ring (December 12, 1920 - March 2, 1979) is regarded as one of the finest hurlers ever to play the game. He was born in Cloyne, County Cork, Ireland. He is commemorated by a sculpture of him in the town. Christy Ring first played for Cork in 1939, and won eight All-Ireland Hurling medals before retiring from inter-county competition at the age of 43. He shares this record with John Doyle of Holycross. He also accumulated 18 Railway Cup medals and many other honours during a long career. Christy Ring died suddenly at the age of 58.
