Christian Lorenz

Flake Lorenz (ne Christian Lorenz) (b. June 11, 1966) is a German musician, most popular for his membership in the German rock band Rammstein.

Timeline

Born on November 6 1966, his family background is vague. There is thought to have a brother. He was brought up and still lives in the Prenzlauer Berg area of Berlin. When he goes to band rehearsals, he passes his old school building.

1981- aged 15 He learned the piano after being given one for his 15th birthday and consequently is a well educated pianist, though he doesn't consider himself very good. How come you ended up playing the keyboard? Flake: A childhood friend of mine played the piano and so I also wanted to learn. I only play keyboard and am not that good. 1982- 16 Apprenticed as a toolmaker; a short lived career apparently. 1983- 17 Played in Feeling B with Paul H. Landers "a fun punk band" for about 10 years. 1989 - 23 Flake squatted/lived in an apartment with Paul, during their early years. When they weren't playing gigs, Landers and Flake, would sell jackets made from cut-up bed sheets and dusters on the black market. Two jackets a month meant as much money as an average salaried worker. "It was quite easy to make a living; not to work and stay out of trouble," says Landers," You only got problems if you were caught." There is a book available about Feeling B. http://www1.buch24.de/1040-0/3-483562-1.htmlhttp://www.ostmusik.de/feeling_b.htm 1994 - 28 Till Lindemann, Richard Z. Kruspe-Bernstein, Oliver "Ollie" Riedel and Christoph Schneider entered and won the Berlin Senate Metro beat contest that allowed them to professionally record a four track demo. Paul H. Landers joined the band fully, then finally Flake. He was initially reluctant to join his five bandmates and had to be pestered into becoming a member of Rammstein. He thought they were too boring It's well documented they all had girlfriend problems about the time Herzeleid was written. The band was included in a documentary about east German music. http://www.achtung-wir-kommen.de/

1995 Herzeleid released. 1997 Sehnsucht released. 1999 Live aus Berlin released. 2001 Mutter released. 2003- 36 Started work on fourth album, which was to prove a turning point in Rammsteins sound and maturity. 2004 -37 September-Release of 'Reise Reise ' Tour in November. Followed by hugely successful sold out European tour of 10 countries, lasting 4 months. 2005 -38 After completing the 'Ahoi' tour in February, Rammstein are due to play 4 dates in Berlin, returning to the Wuhlheide open air arena almost exactly 7 years after their sell out concerts of August 1998. They are scheduled to release a new album, containing new songs and songs remaining from recording Reise Reise in late 2005/early 2006.

From his entries in the logbook, he comes across as being extremely articulate, very astute and with a wicked sense of humor. He's an amateur painter and likes classic cars, has a Mercedes and is involved in vintage car hire business. http://www.classicdepot.de/ He likes to listen to Coldplay, Placebo, Johnny Cash, PJ Harvey, System of a Down, Ministry, Prodigy and once remarked that he would've liked to have been the sixth Rolling Stone. Although he is thought to have married twice, but is now divorced, and has recently stated he shares a house with Till Lindemann.

Quotes from Christian "Flake" Lorenz

On THAT Dance - There are two schools of thought on the 'Weisses Fleisch' interlude. One says it was to relieve the boredom on stage, the second is that one night while doing the dance he caught fire and had to leap around to put it out. Both may be correct. On career choices- Once wanted to be a surgeon, hence the 'Doctor' tag on his name. Flake has no meaning, it's 'just a name'. On American jails- Front man Till Lindemann and keyboardist Flake Lorenz were arrested after a concert in Worcester, Massachusetts, and charged with lewd and lascivious behavior. According to Sgt. Thomas Radula of the Worcester police department, Rammstein's 30-year old frontman, was simulating sex with Flake onstage using a "fake phallic object that shot water over the crowd". Both men were clothed. The two were held overnight and released on $25 bail. Yet, on June 5, police took action in Worcester, Mass., on account of alleged obscene stage acting during the song "Bck Dich" (Bend Over). As a result, Lindemann and key-boardist Lorenz were arrested and spent several hours in prison. After three rounds of negotiations, the sentence was reduced to $100 and six months' probation. (So the sodomy act is supposed to be funny? "Ja, but for me it's not so funny," Flake says, giggling. "Nobody does that, except us- that's why we do it.") For a little variety during the 'Ahoi' tour 2004/05 Flake was flambed in a large cauldron, for Mein teil by Till Lindemann, instead of mock-buggered by him.

On communism - He has remarked that "Communism wasn't so bad", but did follow this with "of course, we're glad the wall fell." On music- "We feel the music and love the music and give the music." On Mutter - At first, we wanted to produce a much more experimental album with seriously wicked electric punk. After Herzeleid and Sehnsucht it seemed foolish to us to record a third album that sounded exactly the same. I'm glad that you see the changes because I wouldn't be happy with everybody saying, "Sure, Rammstein, those guys again..." This idea could've contributed to the problems during the creation of the Mutter album, as metioned by Paul in a recent interview who stated that 'band members fought a lot over musical ideas'. On race relations - "I'm not a racist. I hate everybody." In America they all had a chance to go shooting. Paul said that Flake didn't want to do, it and didn't take part. Flake has been quoted as saying he no longer drinks. In the Rammstein book he tells the story of his first time sober on stage, which was due to a severe bout of diarrhea. He also says that he gets bored on stage. Interviewer; what do you think of America? Flake: It's a sick and decadent country with no culture. On his hectic social life - Whom out of popular people dead or living would you like to hang out with? Flake: I prefer to be alone. The reason that Flake dyed his hair red in 2001 along with the other band members was simply for easy recognition amongst the 100 plus people who comprised their road crew. On hobbies - How do you spend your leisure time? Do you have any hobbies? Flake: eating, drinking, sleeping.... On East German security - Interviewer: you're from East Germany. From the end of WWII, the East German security service Stasi had made files from everybody in Germany. What do you think about that? Flake: There has been a file set up about me, which I was allowed to look into for eight weeks. It precisely reported the concerts I've been to and the band's I'd played in. On musical challenges - Interviewer: it's very good to hear on a song like Nebel, that definitely shows a very dark atmosphere. Flake: Nebel is, of course, the most dramatic song on the album and completely new for us. With Nebel musical influences like massive attack are instilled and I must confess that Nebel was my personal favorite. I love a musical challenge and Nebel was one. On the recording process - Flake: It would be a shame if I released a song in my ego phase without knowing the band's reflections... I see myself, among other things, as a diplomat and a helper in this world. What is all important is music for a young person that helps them find the borders between themselves and society and their parents. That is to say, it must simply allow the parents to say 'Oh God what is that hottentot musik?' For that I accept hostility, misunderstanding and swipes in my private life. If the parents also find the music good, it's function wouldnt be fulfilling any more. I am, among other things, for this purpose that children and teens will become adults.
