Chinese ChristiansChinese Christians are amongst the most persecuted religious groups in the world. The Communist Goverment of the People's Republic of China officially allows religious practise, but only within state-monitored confines. It sanctions an official church, the 'Three Self Patriotic Movement,' whose activity and liberty are restricted. Members must sing from a governemnt approved hymn book, are discouraged taking part in evangelism and healing activities, and are only allowed a Bible which has had the book of Revelation removed. In addition, ministers must provide reports on their congregations regularly, enabling the government to track and monitor believers. But the largest persecuted Christian group in China is made up of believers who are part of the 'underground church,' a movement comprising both catholic and protestant house churches. These believers refuse to register their groups, often meeting in secret in each other's homes. Leaders are especially targeted by the Police, as the 2003 book The Heavenly Man by 'Brother Yun' indicates. It is said that the average pastor in China is a 14 year old girl. Despite torture, restriction and persecution, the Chinese Church continues to grow at amazing rates. The Underground Church plans to undertake a 'Back to Jerusalem' campaign that would see Chinese missionaries travelling along the Silk Road through the 10' 40 window in an attempt to evangelise some of the world's most unreached people groups.
