Childers, Queensland

Childers is a small town located on the Bruce Highway in southern Queensland, Australia, 325 kilometres north of the state capital, Brisbane. It is the administrative centre and main population centre for the Isis Shire. Shire population is approximately 6000 persons (June 2003 ABS estimate). Agriculture is the primary local industry, with sugar cane predominant. The Isis Central Sugar Mill lies to the northwest of the town. Tourism is also becoming more important to the town, with a number of preserved historic buildings becoming attractions. The town made international headlines in June, 2000, when a fire destroyed the Palace Backpackers hostel, claiming the lives of 15 people. The hostel was reopened in 2004, and includes a memorial to those lost in the blaze.
