Cher is a dpartement in the center of France. It is named after the Cher River.

History

Cher was one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from part of the former province of Berry.

Geography

The department is part of the current region of Centre (Val de Loire). It is surrounded by the departments of Indre, Loir-et-Cher, Loiret, Nivre, Allier, and Creuse.

Demographics

The inhabitants of the department are called Berrichons from the former province of Berry.

Tourism

The Bourges Cathedral of St. tienne is a major tourist attraction.
