charter of 1606

The Charter of 1606 was the document under which the London Company sent out its first settlers to Virginia. Under the Charter, The King retained ownership over the land parceled out to colonists by the London Companyhttp://www.jamestowne.org/Royalc.htm. The Charter declared that the inhabitants "....shall have and enjoy the liberties, franchises and immunities...as if they had been abiding and borne within this our realme of Englande..."http://carolshouse.com/places/jamestown/.
