Charlotte Pritt

Charlotte Pritt is an American politician in the state of West Virginia. She is a Democrat. Pritt is the daughter of a coal miner and strong supporter of organized labor. She has served as a state Delegate and Senator at various points in her career. In 1992, Pritt came close to defeating incumbent Governor Gaston Caperton in the primary, but in the end Caperton narrowly won that primary, and won the general election by a wide margin. In 1996 she won the Democratic nomination for Governor, but was defeated by Republican former governor Cecil H. Underwood. Many pundits blamed Pritt's defeat in the highly-Democratic state on male chauvinism, while others believe her liberal opinions on social issues severely hurt her campaign. Despite being heavily Democratic, West Virginia retains a degree of cultural conservatism. Other pundits believe that Underwood won by virtue of his own popularity, having previously served as governor and remaining highly visible in state politics since.
