Charles Mitchel

Charles Mitchel (1920-1996), Irish actor and television newsreader. Charles Mitchel was born in Dublin in 1920. He was educated at Clongowes Wood and Trinity College Dublin. Mitchel became a leading member of the Trinity Players. He left college in 1947 without taking a degree and joined the Gate Theatre. In 1961 he joined the newly formed Teilifs ireann as a newsreader and he read the first news bulletin on 1 January 1962. Mitchel was awarded television personality of the year and was the first RT presenter to be awarded a prestigious Jacobs Award.
