Chane D'information InternationaleLa Chane d'Information Internationale, (or CII), is a proposed French government-backed news channel, aiming to provide a CNN-like service to the world. It is run by a partnership with TF1 Group and France Tlvisions (although some of the programmes will be sourced from AFP, Radio France Internationale, TV5, Arte, EuroNews, and La Chane parlementaire). It will be transmitted to Europe, Africa, The Middle East and New York, USA. CII will be use the three languages of French, English & Arabic (although the inclusion of the Arabic service is currently in question). For copyright reasons the channel (similar to BBC World) will not be broadcast in France. The main reason for the channel is to counter the Anglophone sphere of influence with VOA, CNN & BBC World, which grew in importance with the Iraq war as the America & Britain were on the allied side. The French government was concerned its point of view was lost in the world so an international channel was proposed. In July 2004, Michel Barnier, France's Foreign Minister, revealed that funding had not been provided for in his department's projected spending for 2005 and 2006.
