Chalk Figure

Chalk figures are interesting items of historical significance common in England. They usually consist of shapes and figures cut out of a hillside and then filled in with chalk rubble. These figures are usually Prehistoric in origin. They can take the form of human figures such as the Cerne Abbas Giant in Dorset or animals such as the Westbury white horse. Cutting giant figures is known as Gigantotomy. Cutting chalk horses is Leucippotomy. There are a number of chalk carvings across England such as the badges of Military units and the various 'Lost' carvings at Cambridge, Oxford and Plymouth Hoe.
