Cesare Battisti

Cesare Battisti is a former terrorist/revolutionary who was formerly a member of an organisation called Armed Proletarians for Communism. He joined the organisation in 1976 and is alleged to have committed various murders in Italy. In 1979 he was arrested in Italy and jailed, however he managed to escape 2 years later to France where he was granted asylum by Franois Mitterrand. He was tried in his abscence by the Italian courts in 1993 where he was found guilty of the murders of a prison guard, a neo-fascist militant and a policeman. For these crimes he was sentenced to life in prison. However in February 2004 the French government had him arrested and were planning to extradite him to Italy. He failed to check in at the local police station on Saturday the 21st of August and is thought to have fled the country rather than face life in prison. He was born in 1954 and is the author of several thriller novels including the semi-autobiographical book, The Last Bullets.
