Intially classified as a Cruiser tank and designed during the Second World War. It arrived too late for combat but proved to be one of the most successful British tank designs of all time. It was powered by a Rolls-Royce Meteor engine derived from the Merlin aero engine and manufactured by the Rover car company. The tank weighed about 50 tons in battle readiness. Marks I and II were fitted with a 17 pounder main armament and the Mark III with a 20 pounder gun. Secondary armament was a 7.92mm BESA machine gun. This was later replaced by a .300 calibre Browning and the tank designated Mark V. Later variants (from Mark 5/2) had the 105mm L7 gun as main armament. A total of 24 variants and sub-variants were produced. The Centurion was used as the basis for a range of specialist equipment, including engineering variants with a 165mm demolition gun. Variants - Centurion Mk 5 AVRE 165 - UK Original AVRE vehicle with 165mm demolition gun
- Centurion Mk 5 AVRE 105 - UK Ex-Forward Artillery Observer vehicles converted to AVRE role
